The challenge of "depth of field"

One of the challenges I face when taking a picture, is deciding how much of the object I want in focus. Take these two shots of the same twig. One of them have more of the twig in focus, than the other. The downside to this is the "noise" in the background. Because i used a smaller aperture (higher f stop) and a slower shutter speed than the other one, more information is recorded for the picture. And more color and detail from the back ground is present in the frame. In some situations, this is what you want. In other situations, it quite the opposite of what you want. I was really hoping to avoid to much noise in the back for this picture, but I still think the photo on the left is the better. Just because it shows more details of the twig (including the web).
