My friends call me "Ferdinand". Probably because I spend hours in flowerbeds and gardens with my camera (Ferdiand the bull). 
I find flowers make good shooting practice. You have colors, contrasts and shapes to explore, and not to forget experimenting with depth of field. Here is a sample of roses in my garden this summer (and another flower I don't know whats called, but it smells good)
