Crete vacation, post#9 (Wednesday June 11.)

A rented car for 4 is a lot cheaper than joining the travel agency’s guided tour. And with this mind, we set of, Wednesday morning. What we did not know, was how poorly the Cretans inform travelers of the road. We headed east on the highway and truly believed we would find the sign leading us to Knossos. Fools! We realized soon enough (but too late) the error. We passed by the exit we believed to be on the right hand side of the road in the wrong lane. The exit was on the left. This was the first (and only) exit to the left. And if there were any signs, they must have been hidden. The first chance to turn came after several kilometers. But by then a new attraction caught our attention. The Crete aquarium! A nice surprise we hadn't read about in the guide book. Worth a trip if you're nearby.

Knossos on the other hand (yes, we finally manage to get there) was a disappointment. Having seen several other similar sites in France, Italy and Egypt, I was truly disappointed to see how poorly the site was preserved. It could have been done so much better. Knossos alone was defiantly not worth the 2 hours+ each way. But the miss on the highway turned out to be a hit, and saved the day.
